Windows 10 Modify Settings Page

Windows 10 1803 Settings Page

The “Windows Settings” will replace the “Control Panel” in future Windows releases. Until version 1703 there were no possibilities to modify the standard view of the “Windows Settings”. Since Windows 10 1703 it is possible to modify the Windows settings menu similar to control panel settings.

Group Policy Setting: Settings Page Visibility

Microsoft added a group policy settings called “Settings Page Visibility“. This setting is only available as “Computer Configuration” and can’t be configured for “User Configuration”.

Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Control Panel –> Settings Page Visibility

This policy has two modes: it can either specify a list of setting pages to show or a list of pages to hide. As an example we will hide “Gaming” settings.

hide:gaming-gamebar;gaming-gamedvr;gaming-broadcasting;gaming-gamemode;gaming-trueplay;gaming-xboxnetworking;quietmomentsgame

Result:

hide:gaming-gamebar;gaming-gamedvr;gaming-broadcasting;gaming-gamemode;gaming-trueplay;gaming-xboxnetworking;quietmomentsgame

showonly:gaming-gamebar;gaming-gamedvr;gaming-broadcasting;gaming-gamemode;gaming-trueplay;gaming-xboxnetworking;quietmomentsgame

Result:

showonly:gaming-gamebar;gaming-gamedvr;gaming-broadcasting;gaming-gamemode;gaming-trueplay;gaming-xboxnetworking;quietmomentsgame
It is important to know that you can only hide main page settings like “Gaming” or “Update & Security”  when you disable the corresponding sub pages. The other way round displaying a sub page setting will automatically activate the corresponding main page button. Thats why I prever using the showonly option in enterprise environments. The settings page is under heavy construction by Microsoft and you’ll never know what will be changed by Microsoft by the next release upgrade.

So where do you get the configuration settings?

Microsoft provides a “ms-settings: URI scheme reference” page. There you can get all configuration items to show or hide setting page buttons: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/launch-resume/launch-settings-app

Tested with Windows 10 (SAC)

  • 1803
  • 1709
  • 1703

Keep in mind that for every Windows 10 Release some settings were added or removed. Always check your configuration after any Windows 10 Release Upgrade especially when you are using the hide option.
